About the design

This design is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ, and draws on traditional Catholic symbolism surrounding her faith, purity, intercession, and role in salvation history.

The title "Mater Dei" means "Mother of God" in Latin, expressing the Christian belief that Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, who is truly God and truly man. "Gratia Plena" means "Full of Grace," words associated with the angel Gabriel's greeting to Mary, while "Ora Pro Nobis" means "Pray for us," reflecting the Catholic tradition of asking Mary to intercede in prayer.

The Immaculate Heart on her chest represents Mary's love for God, her devotion to Christ, and her maternal love for humanity. The rosary symbolizes prayer, meditation, and devotion to the life of Jesus through Mary. Her crown and circle of twelve stars represent her queenship and are inspired by the imagery of the woman crowned with twelve stars in Revelation.

Beneath her feet, the crescent moon and serpent symbolize the triumph of holiness over sin and evil, drawing from traditional Marian imagery connected with Genesis and Revelation. The lilies represent purity and innocence, while the crosses keep Christ and His sacrifice at the center of the design.

Together, the artwork represents faith, purity, prayer, protection, devotion, and Mary's role as the Mother of Christ and a symbol of faithful obedience to God.
